Separ of the Americas Blog
Separ Filter designs fuel water separators to meet the performance expectations of next-generation diesel engines.
Single Filter Vs. Duplex Filter
For marine applications, we highly advise installing duplex filters, especially when a vessel is fitted with only one propulsion engine. Duplex filters have a primary and back-up filter. When the primary filter requires maintenance, the user can manually switch to the back-up filter without having to stop the engine. The user can then service the filter at a more convenient time and eliminate downtime.
Clear Bowl Vs. Metal Bowl
The advantage of a clear bowl is that you can monitor the water level and the degree of collected contamination without sensors. For marine applications, the clear bowl must also be equipped with a metal heat deflector for safety and protection purposes. The clear bowl is only offered in the 3 smallest model sizes:
Metal bowls are designed for harsher environments and is resistant to a broader range of temperatures. All model sizes can be available with metal bowls. Metal bowls should be purchased with water contacts.
Connect a remote audio or visual alarm of your choice to the bowl's water contacts. When the water level in the bowl has reached these sensors, the alarm can alert the user when the bowl must be drained. It is highly recommended to purchase metal bowls with water contacts.
The gauge indicates the differential vacuum in the filter and is installed on the filter lid. It is a key indicator to determine when the element is clogged. Use this as a tool to help determine when backflushing or element replacement will be required.
The maximum flow capacity of the filter must be equal or higher than the flow rate of the engine-mounted fuel lift pump. It is very important not to go by the burn rate. Verify the specification with your engine manufacturer or dealer.
For instance, if the maximum flow rate of the fuel lift pump is 120 gallons per hour, the corresponding filter model is SWK-2000/10 (which has a maximum flow capacity of 158 gallons per hour).

The Separ Filter compound vacuum gauge is a useful indication of upcoming maintenance and filter element replacement. The red needle shows the maximum vacuum that has occurred (and is resettable to zero). The black, active needle shows the current vacuum reading. Maximum allowed vacuum is specific to engine manufacturer and can vary within 10-13 inHg.
When part of an engine fuel system, a reading of 8-10 inHg is a sign that backflushing is required. We suggest keeping a record, because the filter can be backflushed up to 5 times before element replacement is necessary. This procedure extends filter element life and the gauge is a clear signal for timely maintenance. As a result, elements are used efficiently and you keep costs to a minimum. Replace the element at least 1 time per year. (Download backflushing instructions or download element replacement instructions.)
Gauges can not be installed on lids that have not been tapped for it. If your existing filter(s) does not have a gauge, you can easily purchase a new lid and gauge assembly. Save 10% now at our online store on the assembly.

Filter maintenance is unnecessary engine downtime while you are at sea or relying on diesel generator power. The Separ Filter duplexes eliminate the need to service the filter immediately, before resuming operation. Duplex units contain two filters, using one at a time. When the primary filter is in need of maintenance, you can manually switchover to the backup filter for continued engine or generator operation. Then service the primary filter or schedule for a later time. Increase your reliability of uninterrupted power. Existing installations below also feature duplexes with vacuum gauges, which help to monitor the need tobackflush the filter or replace the element.
A series of Separ Filter fuel water separators are used to protect fuel systems from generator failure, sludge-clogged lines, and safety issues. Diesel fuel is drawn from the tank and processed by Crown Oil's complex system, equipped with the SWK-2000/130 (each with a flow capacity of 2,058 gallon per hour). Water, bacteria, and sludge is filtered out, so clean diesel is returned back to the same tank. The improved quality of diesel fuel makes it reliable to use and saves cost in replacing degraded fuel.

Keep an eye out for the Separ Filter around the show grounds. On display, the New Holland Genesis T8 Series tractor (below) is equipped with the SWK-2000/5/50 fuel water separator.
"I love my [Separ Filter] hand priming pump. I installed it with replacement of the fuel lines--empty fuel lines and empty filter. Ten strokes till the filter was filled and resistance felt. After 20 strokes pumping as hard as possible the engine turned and caught right away. My engine is a Perkins 4108. That engine is a real nightmare to bleed. With your priming pump no bleeding was needed. I consider your priming pump as a safety item. I can change the Racor filter and flush all the air out of the system in less than 2 minutes. That can make the difference between a safe return and losing your boat on the rocks."
